Gas for cooking to save trees!

Miljögiraff tillsammans med en tvärvetenskaplig projektgrupp jobbar med att öka acceptansen och användningen av gas som energikälla vid matlagning i Kenya. Satsningen syftar till att motverka den enorma skogsskövling som sker på grund av kol efterfrågan.

This page describes the project and what parts we’re working on right now. It also acts as a forum for the projectgroup and anyone interested.

Tasks within the project:

1) Look into technology.

What are the latest technologies for gas container and cooking facilities? The  technology available in Kenya today is expensive and refilling is complicated. We are looking into the latest progress in this area to find a design more suited for the present condition in Nyalenda.

2) What incentives or how can we facilitate a development that more people in Nyalenda can start using gas more often for cooking?

Two reports have been conducted that identified the different boundaries for gas today.

• Peoples myths and attitude towards gas today.
• How much money they spend on charcoal today, this to find out how much they are prepared to pay for gas.
• How charcoal is distributed.

Now we are trying to interpret this information and transform it into information available for people in the area.

3) Are their other cooking methods that should be enhanced to replace some of the charcoal fired cooking?

Gas use have no purpose on its own but the important is to slow down deforestation in the area. Maybe there are other techniques that is a better substitute for coal then gas. Or a diverse solution is the best.

4) Create a businessmodel for distribution of gas including leasing of equipment.

Nyalenda is a very poor region and the initial cost of gas cooking is the biggest boundary to spread the technology. A business model including micro finance is developed to make it affordable for people in the region.
